What Are The Physical Signs Of Stress

Stress is perhaps the most common word used in everyday language. From being tired to feeling angry, we all blame stress. This is partially true, but stress is a lot more then what we think it is. This is precisely the reason why if we don't pay attention to the physical signs that stress causes, problems may take worse effects. So first let's take a look at what stress actually is?

The human body has a very unique way of functioning. Whenever it perceives any demand or threat the body responds in the form of stress. This stress response is your body's way of protecting you. In a variety of different situations, this response helps you to stay focused, energetic and even alert. If you are in an emergency, then stress can also save your life by providing you with the extra strength required for defence.

Don't believe us how? Let's consider your office presentation as an example! When you have to present a project, then it is actually stress that keeps you focused at work, sharpens your concentration and makes you come out creatively productive. It can also help individuals to rise to meet the expectations in specific circumstances.

Since every coin has two sides, stress beyond a certain point can stop being helpful and ma instead cause harm to your body. It can affect your health, mood, relationships and your quality of life in general. Let's take a look at some of the most common physical symptoms that signal towards stress.

Physical signs of stress.

Insomnia

May it be work-related stress or just tension about your day to day habits, one of the most common signs is insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which you have trouble falling asleep. A variety of different thoughts may race through your mind when you begin to sleepy, and as such, you cannot stay asleep for a long time. Insomnia affects the body differently. When you are not able to sleep, the entire day is spent in exhaustion. This ends up making you more irritated and decreases your productivity.

Upset Stomach

Another prevalent symptom observed in people when they are stressed is an upset stomach. There are additional disorders that can be found in this very domain, including diarrhoea, constipation and even nausea. In severe conditions, patients also report the feeling of acid reflux. These problems may magnify in people who do not pay attention to early symptoms and take the form of several other gastrointestinal diseases.

Headaches

Headaches often decrease productivity and bring in a lot of discomfort to a person. However, it is a widespread physical symptom associated with stress. You might want to drink some warm tea, infused with herbs or get a head massage if you are facing headaches since some time. If your headaches persist for a longer time, then it's best to consult a certified health practitioner.

Dizziness

If you are suffering from a generalised anxiety disorder, then dizziness can also occur if you are too stressed. People also get a general feeling of "being out of it." Chronic stress is known to lower down the natural defences of the body, which might lead to this symptom in particular.

Exhaustion

Exhaustion is also one of the most prevalent symptoms associated with stress. Sometimes people get fatigued even without doing the regular amount of work that they do. Exhaustion also decreases productivity, and as such one must always look out for the signs.

Increase in or loss of appetite

Another common symptom of stress includes the change in the amount of food that you take. Sometimes people like to intake more food than usual. When your food habits are drastically changed depending upon your emotional conditions, then it's also known as stress eating. You can avoid stress eating by snacking healthily and not depriving yourself of your daily food requirements.

 Muscle Tension

Muscle tension is also observed in people who feel stressed. This tension can be observed in the muscles that lie in the neck, face or shoulder region. Getting a full body massage and spending some time pampering yourself may help in relieving muscle tension that is associated with stress.

Apart from the common symptoms mentioned above, there are a variety of other symptoms that one can relate to stress. These include trembling or shaking, racing heart, grinding teeth, clenched jaw, sexual difficulties and even drastic weight gain or loss.

As such, keeping an eye on stress and its initial symptoms is very important for us. We are living mechanised lives wherein we always chase our professional and personal excellence. While doing so, we tend to forget our body's requirements which eventually pushes us off-limits. In such a situation, stress will be bound to occur. Practising a healthier way of life and taking care of yourself has never been more important.
