What causes itchy skin

An itching skin might cause a lot of discomfort to an individual no matter the part of the body. However, if your skin is itching uncontrollably, then it may also signify some other underlying cause. In this text, you will find out a few reasons to why your skin is itching. But before jumping to conclusions, you must always consider getting checked by a medical health practitioner.

Sometimes when the skin itches a person may develop a rash. There are also a few microbial agents who cause uncontrollable itching. Apart from these, itching may also be caused by using some cosmetics by which a person is allergic. If you live in a moist vicinity, you're itching may also be due to an insect bite. As you can see, there are a number of different reasons why your skin may be itchy. Therefore, let us take a look at some of these causes in detail.

Dry Skin

Sometimes when your skin is devoid of any moisture, then itching is inevitable. Extremely dry skin is known to be intensely itchy. To manage such a situation, make sure to drink a lot of water. You might also consider applying some moisturising creams regularly. Keep the affected area moisturised at all times. You can also consider using some natural gels such as the aloe vera gel which have antimicrobial properties as well.

Allergy

Allergies are one of the most common causes of why somebody's skin itches. Our skin might develop an allergic reaction to a substance in our lotions or cream. One of the most common substances which produce an allergic reaction to the skin is nickel. Some products which contain nickel are found in every household such as cell phones, belt buckles, jewellery, etc. Apart from nickel, there are several different cosmetic items such as nail polishes, shampoos and fragrances, which are capable of causing an allergic reaction.

If you are allergic to something, you might develop a rash and an uncontrollable itch on the affected region. In order to find out what is causing your allergy, you can take the help of a dermatologist or an allergist.

Insect Bites

As mentioned above, some insect bites also cause uncontrollable itching. Commonly, when a mosquito bites an individual, the itch is known to go away quickly. However, when insects like bugs feed on your skin every night, the itch can last for an extended duration of time. These bugs include bedbugs, lice and even mites. Therefore, if you are unable to find out the cause of your itching, it is best to take the help of a professional. This may also prevent any further infections.

Candida

You're itching may also be a sign of a fungal infection. This strain of fungus causes infection on your skin and other locations as well. When the fungus multiplies and creates an overgrowth, the itching may become even more intense. People may also develop burning red rashes with the wet appearance and dry crusting at the edge of the affected region. In fungal infections, the skin may also become cracked and sore. These cracks may further get infected by bacteria.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is also a type of allergic response. This type of allergy appears hours to days after the individual has come in contact with a potential allergen. Such an allergy produces a red coloured rash. Sometimes, the skin may also become red and scaly. In the worst-case scenarios, blisters may also develop. If you are unable to find out the cause of your itching yourself, it is best to consult a dermatologist. In case your dermatologist suggests an allergic response, you will be needed to consult an allergist to determine the agent of your allergy.

Eczema

Eczema is also one of the most common causes of uncontrollable itching. If you are suffering from the disease, then you will have inflamed and itchy patches of skin. This patch of skin is seen to be irritated and always red. Unfortunately, eczema can flare up, subside and then flare up again. This means one has to follow a strict medical routine to manage and prevent the spreading of this skin disorder. Eczema can occur on any part of the body, but it is commonly observed in the folds of the skin, including inner elbows, back of the knees or even head.

Side Effects

Apart from the other potential skin conditions, your skin itching may also be caused as a side-effect of medication. This may occur with or without a rash. Some drugs which cause itching skin as a side-effect include prescription pain relievers such as opioids and some medicines which help in lowering the blood pressure. If you are suspecting that one of your medications is causing itching skin, then you must consult with your doctor before intaking the drug the next time.
